Local Rabbis Discuss the Significance of Hanukkah During Israel-Hamas Conflict
As the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues to escalate, the Jewish community in St. George, Utah is finding solace in the celebration of Hanukkah. This year, the holiday holds a special significance as it coincides with the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Rabbi Mendy Cohen of the Chabad Jewish Center in St. George explained the importance of Hanukkah during this time, stating that it serves as a reminder of the resilience and strength of the Jewish people. He also emphasized the message of hope and light that Hanukkah brings, even in the midst of darkness and turmoil.
The eight-day holiday commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem after it was reclaimed by the Maccabees from the Syrian-Greek empire in the second century BCE. During this time, the temple’s menorah, a symbol of light and hope, miraculously stayed lit for eight days with only enough oil for one day.
Rabbi Cohen noted that this miracle serves as a reminder to never lose hope, even in the face of adversity. He also highlighted the importance of standing up for one’s beliefs and fighting for freedom, as the Maccabees did.
Rabbi Helene Ainbinder of Congregation Kol Ami in Salt Lake City also spoke about the significance of Hanukkah during this time. She explained that the holiday is a celebration of religious freedom and the right to practice one’s faith without persecution.
She also emphasized the importance of unity and coming together as a community during difficult times. “We are all one people, and we must stand together in solidarity and support for our brothers and sisters in Israel,” Rabbi Ainbinder stated.
Both rabbis expressed their concern for the safety and well-being of those living in Israel and their hope for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. They also encouraged members of the Jewish community to pray for peace and to support those affected by the violence.
In addition to celebrating Hanukkah, the Chabad Jewish Center in St. George is also collecting donations to support those affected by the conflict in Israel. The center is working with local organizations to provide aid and support to those in need.
