The Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Vancouver says staff members are shaken by the latest violent incident at the facility downtown.
Vice chairman Fred Kwok says a man approached the centre on East Pender Street near Columbia Street around closing time on Sunday, July 6, but was turned away.
“He came to the door and tried to force his way into the building, and the staff just kept the latch locked,” said Kwok
That’s when the man started pulling at the locked door so hard that the glass shattered.
CCTV images of the entry show a man, dressed in a black shirt and black pants, pulling on the door before and after it breaks.
Kwok says the staff members were shaken up by what happened, but no one was injured.
In recent years, the centre has been the target of various acts of vandalism and was the scene of a suspicious fire in 2023.

Kwok says the centre and its staff feel helpless when incidents like Sunday’s happen because no one comes to help in time.
“Call the security or call the police. It takes them a while to get here. By the time they get here, this person’s gone.”
