“B.C. on High Alert: Urgent Update on Drought Crisis as Summer Sizzles in Abnormal Dry Spell”

As the heat of summer bears down, the provincial government is set to provide an update on drought preparation and response in B.C. Monday morning.

Water, Land and Resource Stewardship Minister Randene Neill and David Campbell with the BC River Forecast Centre will host a media event at 11 a.m.

Several areas, including parts of northeastern B.C., central B.C., the Okanagan, and sections of the East and West Kootenays, are already in drought conditions according to the latest statistics from the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada.

The province operates an online drought portal that shows 51.5 per cent of the province is classified under drought level 2, considered “abnormally dry.”

The latest Drought Monitoring Summary says “declining flows and rising stream temperatures continue to pose a risk to aquatic ecosystems in tributaries across the Okanagan and Vancouver Island.”
