“Crackdown in Montreal: Police Dismantle Carjacking Syndicate, Nab 5 Suspects in Major Sting Operation”

Montreal police say five men were arrested Wednesday as part of a “major operation” to dismantle a criminal carjacking network in and around the city.

The SPVM says the operation in Montreal, Laval and Rosemère targeted an “organized and structured criminal network involved in the export” of stolen vehicle to foreign countries.

The five suspects, aged 40 to 69, were “high level” in the criminal network, which the SPVM alleges operated in Quebec, Ontario and outside Canada.

Police add more arrests are possible as the investigation continues.

Authorities say the investigation, which began in February 2024, identified 278 stolen vehicles. Of those, 199 were recovered, all intended for overseas export, for a total estimated value of $22.8 million.

Nearly 100 officers from the SPVM, the RCMP and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) were part of Wednesday’s operation. Other police forces such as the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Interpol also collaborated.
