“Terrifying Road Rage Incident Unfolds in Surrey, Police Say Shooting Suspect on the Loose”

Three people were hurt following an overnight shooting in Surrey’s Newton neighbourhood earlier this week.

The Surrey Police Service (SPS) says that at about 1 a.m. on Tuesday, four people in an eastbound car on 84th Avenue near 140th Street were driving when three suspects in a white Tesla Model 3 with Ontario licence plates shot at them.

The suspects took off, and the four people in the other car drove to a nearby police station.

Police say the BC Ambulance Service treated three of the four men for injuries, not considered serious. They were taken to the hospital in stable condition.

SPS Sgt. Tige Pollack tells 1130 NewsRadio that although the motive is still being investigated, it looks like road rage may be to blame, based on information investigators have received from the victims.

“That’s also corroborated by the fact that it happened between two vehicles,” he said Wednesday.

He admits they’re still trying to understand what happened in the lead-up to the shots being fired.

“I’m not sure of the exact circumstances. The investigators are still obtaining evidence, but I am aware that the victim vehicle was driving in a direction, at which point the suspect vehicle, the white Tesla, pulled alongside and multiple shots were fired into the victim’s vehicle.”

Pollack explains why the suspect vehicle, having Ontario plates, has caught their eye.

“I’m not sure if we have an actual license plate, like the letters and numbers, or partial plates — investigators are still looking into that. But there are numerous things that could happen with that, like fake plates. Sometimes, criminals do that to conceal the identity of their vehicles. It could be a vehicle that was brought out here by a dealer for sale, and the plates haven’t been switched. I’m not really sure,” he explained.

“But we alert the public to that because obviously it’s an identifying thing that’s out of the norm that someone may notice, and they may be able to help out police and give us some information.”

As of now, the only suspect description is three South Asian men and nothing else.

“Our investigators are used to starting from zero and solving these crimes. We have various resources such as traffic cameras, CCTV in the area, potentially other vehicles in the area that have cameras, so investigators … will see if there are any other similar cases on the go and then attempt to solve this incident.”

The SPS’ Serious Crime Unit has taken over the investigation, and police say the victims are cooperating.
