Firefighters are on scene battling a structure fire on Burke Mountain northeast of Coquitlam Wednesday.
Coquitlam Fire Chief Scott Young says smoke, appearing to come from near the power lines on the south slope of the mountain, was first reported around 3:30 p.m.
Young says crews dispatched immediately to find the source.
“The fire was located in a forested area and was initially difficult to access from the ground. Coastal Wildfire Service deployed a helicopter which was able to identify the source, which was a cabin — one of the old, old cabins built into Burke Mountain,” Young explained.
He says a coordinated effort of fire crews from different jurisdictions are working to knock down the blaze.
“Early indications suggest that the combined resources on scene will be able to contain the fire, and we’re just asking that the public avoid all trails and access points on Burke mountain at this time, this is both to ensure public safety and allow emergency responders unobstructed access to the area.”
No injuries have been reported.
