Denis Coderre Turns the Page: Ends Political Career in Dramatic Farewell

Former Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre has announced he is “turning the page” on his political life and becoming an ambassador for Résidences Soleil.

The mayor made the announcement Tuesday on his Facebook page.

“Not only do I fully subscribe to their vision, but I also share the values of generosity, solidarity, and mutual aid conveyed by this extraordinary family, as well as their constant concern to prioritize the future of our seniors in our community,” Coderre wrote.

“At 60, I no longer need to engage in partisan politics; I want to use my experience to move things forward with all my heart for the benefit of seniors. And it’s clear: the company is apolitical, it doesn’t take a political position, and it opens its doors to everyone.”

Last year, Coderre still had great political ambitions, as he aspired to lead the Quebec Liberal Party. However, the party rejected his leadership bid due to his tax problems.

Coderre said he was “disgusted” by the decision.

A few months later, he surprised everyone by endorsing Conservative Leader Éric Duhaime, who was seeking re-election in the Arthabaska byelection.

Coderre has a long political career. He was elected mayor of Montreal in 2013. Running for re-election in 2017, he lost to Valérie Plante. He ran again in 2021, but lost again, against the same opponent.

Prior to that, he was a federal Liberal MP from 1997 to 2013 in the Montreal riding of Bourassa. He held various ministries under prime ministers Jean Chrétien and Paul Martin.
