A Kelowna man was fined hundreds of dollars last week after allegedly speeding past a uniformed police officer on a B.C. highway.
On Wednesday, July 16 at around 4 p.m., the B.C. Highway Patrol (BCHP) says the driver of a BMW sped past officers who were “wearing high-visibility vests, carrying stop signs, and on a wide-open highway with no other traffic.”
The vehicle was reportedly clocked going 145 kilometres per hour in a 110 kilometres per hour zone on Highway 97.
“A fully uniformed officer stepped onto the highway to stop the BMW driver. There should have been plenty of time and distance to stop,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin.
One officer got off the road to safety, while the other stopped the driver. Police allege the driver explained he was reading a text message.
The pursuing officer issued multiple fines, including for speeding against a highway sign, using an electronic device while driving, and failing to stop for police when signalled.
The 27-year-old driver is now facing $708 total fines.
“RCMP officers are in the process of transitioning to body cameras, and when you drive by police, your actions will likely be recorded,” McLaughlin warned.
