Vancouver Fire Rescue Service (VFRS) crews knocked down a single-unit fire at an apartment in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside Tuesday afternoon.
VFRS says it received calls about a structure fire just after 12:30 p.m. on East Hastings Street between Carrall Street and Columbia Street.
According to Capt. Matt Trudeau at the VFRS, the fire broke out on the second floor of a single-occupancy residence (SRO).
“We had smoke on the floor, but we confined to the unit. I don’t believe there is any extension outside of that.” Trudeau told 1130 NewsRadio.
However, it could have been worse if the crews had not acted as swiftly as they did, he says.
“Just getting in here really quickly prevented that from getting out of control,” Trudeau stressed.

No injuries were reported.
However, paramedics were called for a separate medical emergency outside the building.
“We are also looking after an unrelated injury in front of the building as well,” Trudeau said.
It’s not yet clear how many people have been displaced, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
This fire occurred only two days after another fire destroyed an SRO building at the intersection of East Hastings Street and Vernon Drive on Sunday.
