Boat Blaze Erupts Under Iron Workers Bridge, Sky Filled with Billowing Black Smoke

A boat fire underneath the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge sent thick black smoke into the air, causing reduced visibility for traffic on Monday afternoon.

According to the District of North Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services, crews responded to the fire just after 6 p.m., discovering a boat burning inside a shed at the marina beneath the bridge.

Assistant Fire Chief Dennis Cappellini shared that crews worked quickly to contain the fire.

“Our crews extended attack lines down to the dock and were able to extinguish the main fire compartment with some extensions on the boat sheds on either side of it,” said Cappellini.

He says crews managed to prevent it from spreading to the dock and the nearby boat sheds.

While the sheds sustained some fire damage, no injuries were reported.
