Vancouver city council has selected Delta’s Donny van Dyk as its new city manager.
The news comes a week after Paul Mochrie announced he would resign after over four years in the role.
Originally from Terrace, van Dyk comes to the City of Vancouver from the City of Delta, where he started as city manager in 2023.
Mayor Ken Sim says he’s “thrilled” to have van Dyk join.
“Donny brings a results-driven mindset and a strong mix of public and private sector experience that will help us deliver real, tangible outcomes for Vancouverites,” said Sim. “Donny’s proven ability to deliver practical results makes him the right person to lead the implementation of Council’s ambitious agenda.”
A City of Vancouver media release says van Dyk managed while Delta saw its crime rates drop to their lowest levels since 2018.
“[Delta was also] successfully delivering on its Provincial Housing Target Order by modernizing the Official Community Plan, updating zoning bylaws, and streamlining development approvals.”
It states that van Dyk, a chartered professional accountant, has previously worked as city manager for Pentiction, chief administrative officer for the District of New Hazelton, and held senior roles at Enbridge.
“I look forward to working with Mayor Sim, Council, City leadership, and the talented City of Vancouver staff team as we deliver on Council’s agenda for a vibrant and inclusive future for everyone who lives and works in this world class city,” said van Dyk in a statement.
As city manager, the release explains, he will oversee the annual operating budget, delivery of the capital budget, and lead a team of approximately 9,600 employees.
In Delta, Deputy City Manager Marcy Sangret will act as manager until council establishes a process to appoint a permanent replacement.
“Council is grateful for his many contributions, from advancing key priorities to fostering a culture of excellence within the organization,” said Delta Mayor George Harvie.
“He leaves Delta well-positioned for continued success, and we wish him all the best in his next chapter.”
