Union Slams Unjust Lockout at Concorde Hotel, Claims Worker Rights Under Siege

A union has condemned the Hotel Le Concorde in Quebec City for locking out around 100 workers on Friday afternoon.

“This difficult but necessary decision comes in the context of ongoing negotiations with the union representing some of the establishment’s employees,” the employer said in a press release on Friday evening. The statement specifies that the hotel remains open.

The Concorde Hotel is the last of 29 hotels participating in the coordinated round of hotel negotiations that has not reached an agreement, according to the union.

“This morning, about 100 workers are without work and income. Our families are counting on us, and the employer must understand that we cannot afford to accept a cut-rate agreement,” said Ines Hajrovic, president of the Hotel Le Concorde-CSN Workers’ Union, on Saturday.

Union members at the Hotel Le Concorde in Quebec City voted for an unlimited general strike mandate, the Coordinated Hotel Negotiation Committee said on its Facebook page on Wednesday.

These workers are demanding a 21 per cent wage increase over four years, in addition to an increase in the employer’s contribution to group insurance and other improvements to their working conditions.

The 11th round of coordinated negotiations brought together more than 3,500 workers from 29 hotel unions in the Capitale-Nationale, Estrie, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, and Greater Montreal regions, according to the Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN).
