The Canadian Coast Guard began an operation Friday to unload a vessel that ran aground earlier this week on the St. Lawrence River in Verchères, Montérégie.
The first attempt to refloat the bulk carrier Federal Yamaska, carried out last Wednesday, failed.

Thus, a cargo unloading operation is necessary to attempt once again to refloat the ship.
Unloading is expected to take several hours, according to the Coast Guard.
In addition to members of the Coast Guard, the Maritime Response Corporation, Eastern Canada (SIMEC) is also on site in case there is pollution during the unloading operation.
The ship itself is carrying sugar, according to a Coast Guard spokeswoman.
The ship ran aground Tuesday morning in the Verchères area, opposite Bouchard Island. According to the specialist website Vesselfinder, the Federal Yamaska is flying the flag of the Marshall Islands.
This is not the first time a ship has become stuck in this area. Last December, the Cypriot ship MV Maccoa also ran aground in Verchères.
The ship was freed only two weeks later.
