The Quebec education sector is facing uncertainty as the new school year approaches, with members of the CSQ, which includes teachers, professionals, support staff, and parents, still unsure about the services students will receive. This uncertainty stems from budget cuts of $570 million announced in June, followed by a $540 million reinvestment in mid-July, causing last-minute changes amidst a hiring freeze imposed in November.
Questions linger about the number of speech therapists, special education assistants, and technicians who will be available, as well as the working hours for part-time staff. CSQ President Éric Gingras criticized the government for the unpredictability caused by these decisions, highlighting the challenges faced by the education network despite recent investments.
Gingras expressed concerns about the impact of cuts on student services and stressed the need for predictability and adequate resources to support students effectively. The CSQ believes that teachers will bear the brunt of the stress caused by shortages and inadequate support, urging the government to prioritize education and address the concerns raised by education personnel and the community.
Despite the challenges, a recent survey showed that 70% of Quebecers support education personnel and agree that a clear plan forward is necessary to rebuild trust and improve the education system. The CSQ is committed to finding solutions and working collaboratively to strengthen the education sector and ensure students receive the support they need.
