“Docteur-Penfield Ave. Faces 8-Year Lockdown for Major Downtown Overhaul!”

Downtown Montreal Street Closed for Eight-Year Water Infrastructure Upgrade Project

Docteur-Penfield Avenue in downtown Montreal will be closed for the next eight years between McTavish and Pine Avenue for a major construction project. The City has deemed this closure necessary to upgrade the nearly century-old water pumping station located just above Rutherford Park.

Philippe Sabourin, a City spokesperson, acknowledges the inconvenience this closure will cause for motorists, but emphasizes the importance of securing the drinking water supply for the 1.2 million citizens who rely on it. Sabourin described the McTavish Reservoir as the “heart” of Montreal’s water system.

The City has been planning this project for the past 15 years, with an estimated cost of $250 million. The first two years will focus on preparatory work, while the following six years will be dedicated to replacing the aging infrastructure.

Sabourin explained that updates to the electricity system and extensive digging around the hill are among the tasks that need to be completed during this project. Motorists are advised to use a section of Pine Avenue, now converted into a two-way street between Docteur-Penfield and Peel Street, as an alternative route. Alternatively, using Sherbrooke Street is also recommended.

Despite the road closure, pedestrian access will be maintained within the construction zone to ensure the safety and convenience of pedestrians.
