Authorities across Canada are warning the public to be cautious of strangers seeking hugs or sharing emotional stories following a series of distraction thefts. In Edmonton, police have received over 60 reports since May of people falling victim to thieves who steal belongings while distracting them.
Last week, three women were arrested for theft in connection with these incidents, with warrants issued for three others believed to be involved. Edmonton police Const. Shiva Shunmugam revealed that these thieves are likely part of a larger network operating from British Columbia to Toronto.
The modus operandi of the thieves involves approaching unsuspecting individuals in public places under the guise of a friendly conversation, even going as far as asking for hugs or blessings on jewelry. During these interactions, the thieves swiftly snatch the victim’s belongings and flee in vehicles with license plates from different provinces.
Similar thefts have been reported from coast to coast, with incidents in British Columbia, Ottawa, Winnipeg, and Edmonton. The thieves often target vulnerable individuals, including seniors, by using distraction tactics and emotional manipulation to carry out their crimes.
Authorities have emphasized the importance of being cautious and not allowing strangers into personal space. Victims of these thefts have been left emotionally scarred, highlighting the devastating impact of such deceptive practices.
