The Metro Vancouver Regional District (MVRD) says it has issued an air quality warning for the eastern parts of Metro Vancouver and the central and eastern Fraser Valley.
The district says the warning relates to elevated levels of ground-level ozone — or smog — in the air, caused by nearby local emissions and high temperatures.
The eastern Fraser Valley is also seeing high levels of fine particulate matter from smoke from the Sailor Bar wildfire burning north of Yale in the Fraser Canyon.
“Smoke concentrations may vary widely across the region as winds, temperatures, and wildfire behaviour change,” the MVRD said.
The Sailor Bar wildfire was discovered Saturday. As of Sunday, it was burning out of control at close to 50 hectares.
Residents are advised to take precautions, including limiting time outdoors, keeping windows and doors closed, and using a HEPA air filter.
“If your home is too smoky or hot, spend time in community spaces that have air conditioning since they also tend to have better air quality,” the district said.
“These can include community centres, libraries, and shopping malls.”
Anyone experiencing symptoms like chest discomfort, shortness of breath, dizziness, and severe coughing or wheezing should seek medical care.
The smog warning is expected to last until Monday at the earliest. The fine particulate matter in the eastern parts of the valley is expected to last Sunday and Monday or until smoke conditions improve.
All warnings will remain in effect until further notice.
