Case of Montreal teen facing terrorism-related charges involving Islamic State adjourned to Friday

The case of a 17-year-old Montrealer who was allegedly planning a terrorist attack was back in youth court Monday.

The suspect faces five charges, three of which are terrorism related, following an investigation by the RCMP.

The teen, whose identity is protected because he is a minor, was arrested Wednesday in a residential building in Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges–NDG borough.

At the defence counsel’s request, the case was adjourned to Friday, at which point it’s expected a bail hearing date will be set.

The RCMP in Quebec received a tip about the accused, who was allegedly plotting to kill multiple people and trying to buy an AK-47 for the Islamic State.

The teen was charged with assaulting a police officer – which allegedly took place during the arrest – and assault with a weapon causing bodily harm.

The other charges are participating in the activity of a terrorist group, facilitating terrorist activity and providing or making available goods or services for terrorist purposes.

The RCMP assures that at no time the public was at risk.

The Crown said it would pursue an adult sentence – up to 14 years in prison – if the minor is found guilty.

The teen remains detained; his release was opposed by the Crown.
