REM prolongs night & weekend shutdowns ahead of network expansion

After recently resuming full service following a six-week shutdown, Montreal’s Réseau express métropolitain (REM) has announced extended evening and weekend service interruptions.

Weekday service is now expected to end earlier from Sept. 1 to Oct. 3, with the last train to Gare Centrale departing at 8:20 p.m., and the final train to Brossard leaving at 8:40 p.m.

Additionally, the REM also announced on social media Monday that there will be no weekend service on:

“Shuttles will be available outside of normal business hours,” the REM said in their post to X. “We understand that these adjustments have an impact on your daily life, and we thank you for your cooperation.”

This means that compared to what was originally planned, the earlier closures during the week is being extended by five weeks, while the weekend closures is one extra weekend.

These extended closures are part of preparations for the upcoming launch of REM branches to the West Island and North Shore.

While no official opening date has been confirmed, the rollout is still planned for this fall. Officials say the additional time is essential to ensure a efficient and reliable expansion.

The REM line’s five South Shore stations were closed from July 5 to Aug. 17 while CDPQ Infra conducted dynamic tests across the full network.
