Rollerblader, 12, struck and killed in Shawnigan Lake crash

Mounties say speed was a factor in a motor vehicle collision that left one youth dead in Shawnigan Lake.

Shawnigan Lake RCMP says it received reports Monday just after 8:30 p.m. that a youth was struck by a vehicle four kilometres southwest of Cowichan Bay.

Responding officers say the 12-year-old was rollerblading with their family when a Honda Civic lost control and hit the child.

The driver proceeded to crash into a telephone pole.

The driver and the passenger of the car, both 17, were transported to hospital with minor injuries.

“While we do not suspect that alcohol was involved, it has been determined that speed played an important factor in this tragic incident”, said Corporal Alex Bérubé, spokesperson for the BC RCMP. “The investigation remains in its early stages and police continue to gather evidence”, he adds.

There is no word on any arrests at this time.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Shawnigan Lake RCMP at 250-743-5514.
