Montreal’s Roadwork Saga Continues: Major Project Count Holds Steady Through Fall

Montreal Faces 44 Major Road Construction Projects This Fall
Montreal is gearing up for a busy fall season as Mobilité Montréal, the city’s transportation coordination committee under Quebec’s transport ministry, has announced 44 major road construction projects planned for the upcoming months. These projects, set to unfold in Montreal and the Greater Montreal Area, are large-scale endeavors that may result in complete road closures, causing potential disruptions for motorists.

The heart of the construction activity will be concentrated in Montreal’s downtown core, where multiple projects are slated to coincide, making driving a challenging task. City spokesperson Philippe Sabourin advised commuters to opt for public transit when navigating downtown Montreal due to the expected traffic congestion.

During Mobilité Montréal’s seasonal update, it was revealed that the total number of major projects remains consistent with the previous season, with efforts being made to limit the number of large-scale endeavors to under 50. The Quebec Transportation Ministry emphasized the necessity of these overhauls to address Montreal’s aging road infrastructure and ensure the safety and efficiency of the city’s transportation network.

In a separate development, Montreal’s auditor general recently criticized the city’s lack of coordination and mismanagement in construction projects, attributing poor road maintenance to insufficient mechanisms and a fragmented approach that impedes preventive maintenance and long-term planning.

Despite the challenges posed by ongoing construction, Montrealers express frustration with the constant disruptions to their daily routines. Concerns over road closures and unclear communication from authorities have left residents like Aisha Hamilton feeling overwhelmed by the seemingly haphazard construction activities throughout the city.
