Ottawa Invests $22.7 Million to Boost Electric Vehicle Infrastructure in British Columbia

The electric vehicle charging network in British Columbia is expanding significantly, thanks to a nearly $22.7 million investment from the government. Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson revealed plans for eight projects across the province, which will see over 480 new charging stations being set up in key areas, including busy highway routes and high-demand locations.

These charging stations will cater to the needs of both current electric vehicle (EV) owners and those considering making the switch to electric, aiming to alleviate concerns about range anxiety. The funding, part of the Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program, will support initiatives led by BC Hydro, the City of Victoria, and the District of Saanich to enhance the EV charging infrastructure.

Energy Minister Tim Hodgson emphasized the importance of these investments in promoting a cleaner and more competitive economy, stating that Canada is on track to becoming an energy superpower through such practical solutions. The latest development follows B.C.’s recent installation of charging stations at 30 highway locations, further bolstering the existing network of over 5,000 stations in the province.
