Canada’s food watchdog is issuing a recall for over 25 products containing pistachios over concerns of potential salmonella contamination.
The recall follows a recent investigation prompted by ongoing reports of illnesses. The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) is actively monitoring a salmonella outbreak related to pistachios and pistachio-based goods, with numerous cases reported between March and August 2025.
PHAC data reveals 62 confirmed cases of salmonella tied to this outbreak, with 10 individuals requiring hospitalization. Officials suspect the actual number of affected individuals in Canada to be much higher, as many cases may go unreported.
Recalls have been issued for pistachio products from various brands in Ontario, British Columbia, Quebec, and New Brunswick. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced the recall of 27 products sold in Ottawa from Pistachio Choco and La Brioche.
CFIA is actively investigating food safety concerns and may expand the list of recalled items. The agency urges consumers to discard or return any affected products to the point of purchase.
Salmonella-contaminated food may not exhibit unusual odors or appearances but can still cause illness. Symptoms can range from short-term discomforts like fever, headache, and digestive issues to more severe complications like arthritis.
