Community Efforts Triumph: Cineplex Queensway Secures Lease Renewal, Doors Stay Open!

Moviegoers and community activists in Etobicoke are rejoicing as Cineplex confirms the Queensway theatre will remain open, dispelling fears of demolition amid a controversial redevelopment proposal.

The news was shared on LinkedIn by Cineplex, reassuring the Queensway community, “We are thrilled to announce that the show will go on… the credits won’t be rolling anytime soon.”

To emphasize their commitment, the company has displayed two banners outside the theatre, affirming their dedication to the area.

Since its establishment in 2001, Cineplex Cinemas Queensway & VIP at 1025 The Queensway has been a beloved entertainment and social hub for families, couples, and friends in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

Earlier this year, uncertainty loomed over the theatre’s future following Toronto City’s approval of a development plan featuring 10 condo towers and thousands of residential units. Concerns arose about the potential loss of the cherished venue and the strain on local resources due to increased density.

In response to public outcry, a Change.org petition titled “Save Cineplex Cinemas Queensway (Etobicoke) from being demolished!” garnered over 14,700 signatures, prompting Cineplex to extend its lease for up to 20 years.

The decision has been met with jubilation online, with residents expressing relief and excitement over the theatre’s continued presence in the community.

To celebrate the good news, Cineplex announced special offers of $5 general admission tickets and $5 popcorn this weekend.
