“Montreal’s Firefighters at Risk: Auditor General Exposes Outdated Gear and Training Gaps”

The Montreal fire department is facing serious equipment management issues that are jeopardizing the safety of firefighters, warns a recent report by the City of Montreal Auditor General. The report reveals significant gaps in inventory management, inspection, and maintenance processes, with more than 20,000 pieces of protective equipment deemed incomplete, unreliable, and non-compliant.

According to the Montreal Firefighters Association (MPA), these shortcomings have been a known security crisis ignored by the municipal administration for up to 15 years. MPA President Chris Ross expressed both vindication and frustration over the report’s findings, emphasizing the urgent need for a public and independent action plan to address the deficiencies.

The report also highlights concerns about inadequate oversight of mask leak tests, insufficient training monitoring, and maintenance skills related to personal protective equipment (PPE). It points out inconsistencies in completing training courses, raising alarms about the compromised safety of firefighters due to faulty equipment and lack of proper training.

While Montreal Fire Department (SIM) Chief Richard Liebmann acknowledged the accuracy of the report, he defended the department’s efforts to improve the situation over the years. Despite his reassurances that firefighters’ lives are not at immediate risk, the report underscores the urgent need for systemic changes to ensure the effectiveness and safety of the department’s equipment management.
