Authorities in Penticton, British Columbia, are currently looking into a concerning incident involving a senior municipal staff member being threatened with violence in the city.
According to a city statement, the individual was singled out on social media and faced threats after discussing transportation planning matters publicly.
Mayor Julius Bloomfield has strongly condemned the threats, labeling them as “deeply troubling and completely unacceptable.” The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are now handling the investigation.
Bloomfield emphasized that ongoing traffic safety enhancements in Penticton are a direct outcome of extensive community input spanning several years, aiming to create neighborhoods with safe and inclusive travel options.
Residents have consistently advocated for streets that prioritize livability and safety, he noted, stressing that staff should be able to carry out their duties without intimidation.
In a related comment, Bloomfield highlighted Penticton’s values of dialogue, diversity, and respect, stating that while passionate debates are welcome, any form of harassment or threats will not be tolerated.
City manager Anthony Haddad acknowledged that transportation planning can spark disagreements but emphasized that violence threats are never acceptable. He stressed the importance of healthy, respectful discussions, stating that such behaviors undermine the democratic process.
Haddad reaffirmed the city’s support for its staff and its commitment to engaging with all community perspectives in a respectful manner, noting that authorities are cooperating with law enforcement in investigating the recent threats.
