Residents in Mississauga are now required to obtain a permit for using fireworks this Labour Day, whereas Brampton has enforced a complete ban on fireworks.
During holidays, such as Canada Day, Mississauga often faces an increase in complaints related to fireworks usage. City officials reported receiving more than 60 complaints during the recent Canada Day holiday period.
Fireworks are permitted without a permit on specific occasions like Victoria Day, Canada Day, Diwali, Lunar New Year, and New Year’s Eve.
To encourage safe celebrations, city officials in Mississauga have recommended utilizing sparklers, glow sticks, or noisemakers as alternatives to fireworks.
Contrastingly, Brampton has implemented strict regulations, prohibiting the use, sale, display, purchase, distribution, and possession of any fireworks within the city limits.
Violating the ban on discharging fireworks in Brampton carries a minimum fine of $500, while selling fireworks can result in a penalty of up to $100,000. However, sparklers are an exception and are allowed under the ban in Brampton.
Earlier this year, additional cities in Ontario, including Kitchener and Waterloo, also imposed restrictions on the sale of fireworks.
