A team of forty Quebec wildfire fighters is set to embark on a mission to help battle the ongoing wildfires in Nova Scotia. The deployment, organized by the Société de Protection des Forêts Contre le Feu (SOPFEU), includes not only the firefighters but also two SOPFEU representatives and a technical specialist. The team will be heading to Nova Scotia for a 14-day assignment, starting this Saturday.
Nova Scotia’s Emergency Management Minister, Kim Masland, revealed that the largest wildfire in the province recently destroyed 20 homes in the Annapolis Valley due to the intense flames of the Long Lake fire, which are still burning out of control.
In a noteworthy display of solidarity, Quebec has been actively lending support in wildfire fighting efforts to various provinces and territories, including California, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon, Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, and New Brunswick, in addition to Nova Scotia.
“This year has seen a significant increase in Quebec’s assistance beyond its borders,” SOPFEU highlighted in a press release.
With Quebec’s own fire situation currently stable, SOPFEU is able to extend support to other regions without compromising its ability to respond effectively within the province.
