Surrey Food Bank Hits All-Time High in Demand, Shatters Previous Records

The Surrey Food Bank has reported a surge in demand, reaching a new peak in July, with nearly 21,000 clients seeking assistance. Executive Director Kim Savage expressed concern over the record-breaking numbers, attributing the increase to economic struggles faced by many families.

As the new school year approaches, the food bank is bustling with activity, providing support to families preparing for back-to-school expenses. Despite the challenging circumstances, Savage highlighted the positive shift in attitudes towards seeking help, emphasizing the importance of breaking the stigma associated with food insecurity.

The diverse clientele of the food bank includes newcomers to Canada, children, seniors, and low-income families relying on government assistance. Savage acknowledged the heartbreaking reality behind these statistics, underscoring the need for continued community support in addressing the ongoing challenges faced by vulnerable individuals and families.

While monetary donations are always welcome, the Surrey Food Bank is also in need of culturally diverse food items such as rice, beans, lentils, and halal options to cater to the diverse backgrounds of its clients.
