A dedicated group of volunteers known as Food Bank on Wheels is making a significant impact by delivering essential hampers to single-parent families in need. Partnering with the renowned delivery service Amazon, this charitable organization operates from a humble basement suite in Pitt Meadows. They collect donations from local grocery stores, butchers, and bakeries to provide crucial support to families in the Tri-Cities, Maple Ridge, Langley, and beyond.
Co-founder Chris Miroslaw highlighted the challenges faced by mothers dealing with mental or physical illnesses while caring for their children. The initiative ensures that these families receive a monthly supply of nutritious food, alleviating their burdens for 10 to 12 days.
One of the beneficiaries, single mother Brittanie, shared her personal experience of struggling with a seizure disorder and the relief she found through Food Bank on Wheels, which eventually inspired her to volunteer and give back to others facing similar challenges.
With a current clientele of approximately 100 families, the upcoming collaboration with Amazon, starting on Sept. 3, will streamline the pickup and delivery process, allowing the charity to focus on other essential tasks like sorting and assembling hampers.
President James Silcox, driven by his own upbringing by a single mother and close connections with single parents, emphasized the rewarding aspect of providing assistance to those in need. The organization’s future plans include expanding their warehouse space to accommodate their growing operations.
