“Disability Advocates Demand Immediate Increase in Shelter Allowances in British Columbia”

People living on disability in British Columbia are facing a challenging financial battle due to the rising cost of living while assistance rates remain stagnant. Mary-Jean Belanger, a disability advocate, expressed her concerns, stating that the situation has pushed many individuals into deep poverty.

In response to the growing need, the province increased shelter rates for Persons with Disabilities (PWD) from $375 to $500 per month in 2023. However, this adjustment falls short when compared to the current rental prices in British Columbia. Belanger, who is both a disability recipient and a part-time worker, has launched a petition urging provincial leaders to revise shelter allowances to keep pace with market rates.

The BC Poverty Reduction Coalition has been actively campaigning through their “Raise the Rates” initiative to highlight the struggles faced by individuals on disability or social assistance. Sacia Burton, the advocacy and outreach manager at the coalition, emphasized that the current assistance levels are well below the poverty line and are inadequate to meet basic needs, perpetuating a cycle of poverty for many.

James Schultz, a PWD recipient, emphasized the financial strain of trying to cover essential expenses with insufficient support. He shared his challenges in balancing bills and basic necessities, with the stagnant assistance rates leaving him with little to spare.

While advocates continue to push for change, the BC Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction, Sheila Malcomson, assured that affordable housing remains a government priority, particularly for those on fixed incomes. Efforts are being made to increase affordable housing options and support programs to alleviate the burden on vulnerable populations.

Belanger’s petition to raise shelter rates is set to be presented to the legislature in late October, aiming to bring about meaningful change for individuals relying on disability assistance in the province. She emphasized the fundamental human right of having a home and expressed hopes that the petition will garner enough support to improve the lives of those struggling with financial constraints.
