Leylah Fernandez’s Impressive U.S. Open Run Comes to an End
Canadian tennis sensation Leylah Fernandez faced a tough defeat in the third round of the U.S. Open against Aryna Sabalenka, the world’s No. 1-ranked player from Belarus. Despite a valiant effort, Fernandez fell short in a match that lasted one hour and 37 minutes on Friday night.
Although Fernandez had more unforced errors and double faults compared to Sabalenka, the latter showcased her dominance with more winners and aces. Sabalenka’s ability to save break points and capitalize on opportunities ultimately secured her victory over Fernandez.
Sabalenka’s outstanding performance propelled her into the round of 16, where she is set to compete against Cristina Bucsa of Moldova on Sunday. Meanwhile, Fernandez will return to the court on Saturday for the women’s doubles event alongside tennis legend Venus Williams.
In the previous rounds, Fernandez displayed her tenacity with victories over Elsa Jacquemot and a notable upset against the sixth-seeded pairing of Lyudmyla Kicheno and Ellen Perez. Despite her singles journey coming to an end, Fernandez continues to shine in the doubles competition, aiming for further success on the court.
