Following the completion of repairs at the King and Church intersection, streetcar service on King Street East in the city has resumed. However, commuters now face upcoming interruptions at the other end of the route.
The intersection work finished on August 18 but service only resumed after a testing period over the long weekend on the newly installed tracks. Despite the joy of service restoration, another shutdown looms on the horizon.
Transit advocate Steve Munro highlights two upcoming disruptions. The first, scheduled for next weekend during TIFF, will divert King cars away from King Street between Thursday, September 4, and Monday, September 10, around King and John.
The second disruption, slated to start in mid-September, will impact a larger number of commuters. The closure of the King and Dufferin intersection for track reconstruction will significantly affect transit services in the area.
During this period, there will be no service on Dufferin Street between Queen Street West and the Dufferin Gate/Exhibition Loop. Bus routes will be diverted, with adjustments made to accommodate the disrupted service.
Munro emphasizes the inconvenience this will cause to commuters, especially those living south of King Street, who will need to adjust their travel routes during the interruption.
The King and Dufferin service disruption is anticipated to last until late October, leading to temporary changes for transit users in the affected areas.
