“Saint-Leonard Community Rallies to Demand Urgent Borough Action Against Flood Threats”

Residents in Montreal’s Saint-Leonard neighborhood are raising concerns about inadequate flood prevention measures in the area. The Citizens’ Movement Committee, comprising around 10 residents, is pushing for action to address the flooding issues that have plagued the community, particularly on Belmont Street after heavy rainfall on July 13.

Giuseppe Conte, a member of the committee, emphasized the urgent need for the borough to update its infrastructure to prevent further flooding incidents. He highlighted the significant impact of rising industrial taxes and the ineffectiveness of current solutions like anti-backflow valves in addressing the root cause of the problem.

Pat Monaco, another resident, expressed frustration over repeated flooding events damaging his home in recent years. He stressed the financial burden of repairing the damage and emphasized the city’s responsibility to address the underlying infrastructure issues rather than relying solely on individual property owners to mitigate flooding risks.

The residents are urging the city to prioritize infrastructure improvements, starting with addressing piping issues, to effectively tackle the ongoing flooding challenges in the neighborhood.
