BCGEU Strike Gains Momentum as BC Greens Throw Their Support Behind Workers

Thousands of provincial government workers in British Columbia are continuing their strike, which started on Tuesday and is ongoing in multiple locations including Prince George, Surrey, and Victoria. The BC General Employees’ Union, representing 34,000 members across various sectors, has vowed to prolong the strikes until further notice. The union is demanding better wage deals and is prepared to escalate strike actions if necessary.

While around 2,000 union workers, mainly in civil service, have joined the strike, negotiations between the government and the union are underway to find a resolution. However, the union insists on a more favorable offer from the province before returning to the bargaining table. The strike was initiated following a strong mandate from union members, with over 92% voting in favor of job action.

In a related development, the Professional Employees Association, comprising licensed professionals such as geoscientists, engineers, and psychologists, also initiated a walkout on Tuesday. Despite the dual strikes, disruptions to public services have been limited, with minor inconveniences reported at some locations.

The BC Green Party has voiced its support for the striking workers, emphasizing the importance of fair wages to sustain the province’s economic growth. Interim leader Jeremy Valeriote highlighted the significance of adequately compensating employees to boost both the economy and the well-being of individuals and communities.
