Quebec Safety Board Urges Enhanced Armament for STM Special Constables

The Workplace Safety Board in Quebec has raised concerns about the safety of Montreal’s transit constables and recommended better arming them to address security fears. This recommendation comes in response to safety complaints filed by the public transit agency regarding the constables’ well-being within the network.

While the report suggests equipping the constables with additional weapons, it does not specify which ones, given that the constables already have tools like batons, handcuffs, and pepper spray at their disposal.

The union representing transit constables advocates for providing electroshock weapons, such as Tasers, to enhance their safety measures.

Montreal’s transit agency has noted a surge in calls to constables due to disruptive incidents within the network. Additionally, the agency’s leadership has expressed concerns over the metro system serving as a temporary refuge for individuals grappling with drug addiction and mental health issues.
