Springer Smashes Two Homers, Blue Jays Outslug Reds in 12-9 Thriller Despite Pitching Wobbles

The Toronto Blue Jays outlasted the Cincinnati Reds in a high-scoring affair on Tuesday night, securing a 12-9 victory. George Springer shined with a spectacular performance, smashing two home runs and driving in three runs. Bo Bichette also contributed with a crucial three-run homer to propel the Blue Jays to victory.

Despite a rocky start, with the Blue Jays having 23 blown saves this season, relief pitcher Jeff Hoffman stepped up by allowing just one hit in the ninth inning to secure his 30th save. Meanwhile, Louis Varland delivered a solid relief performance, allowing only one hit in 1 2/3 innings.

Blue Jays’ starting pitcher Jose Berrios struggled, lasting only two innings and giving up six runs, although only two were earned. Eric Lauer also faced challenges, conceding two earned runs in 2 1/3 innings after being shifted to the bullpen.

The Reds faced adversity as well, with their scheduled starter Nick Lodolo sidelined due to illness. Instead, Scott Barlow made his first career start but struggled against the Blue Jays’ potent lineup.

Springer set the tone early with a leadoff homer, sparking a strong offensive showing by the Blue Jays. Bichette added to the onslaught with a three-run blast, and Springer further extended the lead with his second home run of the game.

Both teams traded blows throughout the game, with Daulton Varsho and TJ Friedl each hitting solo homers for the Reds to keep the game close.

Springer’s outstanding performance included his 25th and 26th home runs of the season, solidifying his reputation as a premier leadoff hitter. With 62 career leadoff homers, including a franchise-best 23 for the Blue Jays, Springer continues to make his mark in MLB history.

Looking ahead, the Blue Jays will send Shane Bieber to the mound to face the Reds’ Zack Littell in the series finale on Wednesday.
