Breaking: Andrée Laforest Shakes Up Political Scene, Ditches CAQ to Run for Mayor of Saguenay

As the CAQ ship faces challenges, Municipal Affairs Minister Andrée Laforest steps down to pursue mayoral candidacy in Saguenay.

Confirming long-swirling rumors, Laforest announced her decision at a Chicoutimi hotel, setting her sights on the upcoming municipal elections on Nov. 2.

Her departure from the government triggers the need for a byelection within six months, with Premier François Legault preparing for the unforeseen shuffle before the scheduled 2026 general election.

Having served Chicoutimi since 2018, Laforest clinched a significant victory in the 2022 election, securing 62% of the votes. However, the tides may turn in the upcoming by-election, with Parti Québécois leading the polls at 51%, ahead of Coalition Avenir Québec at 25%.

While the PQ has dominated recent byelections in various regions, the upcoming political landscape remains unpredictable.

At the national level, the current projections suggest a potential shift in power, with the Coalition Avenir Québec facing uncertainty over their stronghold.

Laforest’s exit coincides with Legault’s imminent cabinet reshuffle, aiming to inject fresh momentum into his administration.

Meanwhile, tensions simmer at Saguenay City Hall, with incumbent mayor Julie Dufour embroiled in legal disputes over election malpractices. Despite the controversies, Dufour plans to contest the upcoming elections, facing opposition from city council members demanding her resignation.

The mayoral race in Saguenay also sees notable contenders like former PQ MNA Mireille Jean, Équipe du renouveau démocratique leader Christine Basque, and Fromagerie Boivin ex-owner Luc Boivin vying for the coveted position.
