Luc Rabouin, leader of Projet Montréal and a mayoral candidate, presented his comprehensive environmental plan on Friday. In a press conference, Rabouin emphasized the importance of preparing neighborhoods to combat the impacts of climate change. Joining him were candidates from areas directly affected by these environmental challenges.
One of Rabouin’s key pledges is to increase annual infrastructure investments from $15 million to $30 million, with a focus on doubling the number of rainwater retention facilities. These facilities will extend beyond parks to include other areas, such as sponge parks, sidewalks, and streets, to mitigate heat island effects and flooding. The aim is to create infrastructure that can absorb rainwater and reduce pressure on the sewer system, while also assisting homeowners in safeguarding their properties from flooding.
Furthermore, Projet Montréal announced a new $5 million initiative to aid building owners in high-risk zones in fortifying their properties against flooding. The party also committed to a tree-planting initiative and ensuring that every Montrealer has access to a green space within a 15-minute walk.
