SQ Cracks Cold Case, Arrests Suspect in Decades-Old 1979 Murder Mystery

The Unsolved Cases Unit of the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) made a groundbreaking announcement on Friday, revealing the resolution of a 46-year-old homicide case. A suspect has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the long-unsolved murder.

The arrest revolves around the tragic incident that took place in February 1979 in Causapscal, located in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region. The victim, Adrien Allard, was brutally murdered at the age of 47 during an attack by two individuals dressed in snowmobile gear at his residence, where he was with his brother.

Despite putting up a fight, Allard lost his life during the confrontation. The investigation into this cold case saw a significant development as an unidentified man was apprehended for his alleged involvement in the crime after being questioned by authorities in February 2025. He was subsequently released pending further inquiries.

According to the SQ, a combination of evidence collected during the initial investigation and advancements in forensic techniques has now linked the suspect to the decades-old homicide. The arrested individual is set to make a court appearance in Amqui later today.
