Study Reveals Organized Crime as Top Menace to Canadian Retail Sector

Retail Industry Facing Rising Threat of Organized Crime

A recent study conducted by the Retail Council of Canada has revealed that the retail sector is increasingly vulnerable to organized crime activities, posing a significant threat to businesses across the country.

According to the study, a staggering 95% of retailers identified organized crime as the most significant challenge to their operations. In 2023 alone, retail businesses suffered losses amounting to $9.2 billion due to organized criminal activities, representing a sharp increase from previous years.

Rui Rodrigues, executive advisor of the Loss Prevention Research Council (LPRC), highlighted the concerning rise in retail crime in Canada over the past few years. Rodrigues emphasized the urgent need for collaboration between retailers and law enforcement agencies to combat this growing menace.

The impact of organized crime was exemplified by the experience of Roger Azuelos, owner of Emmanuel Men’s Clothing, who fell victim to a theft ring that cost him nearly $5,000. Azuelos recounted how his store was targeted by a group of thieves who orchestrated a calculated theft operation, resulting in significant financial losses.

To address the escalating threat, the Retail Council of Canada has been actively engaging in targeted initiatives with law enforcement agencies. These efforts have led to the seizure of numerous weapons and the apprehension of repeat offenders involved in organized retail crime.

Shoplifting emerged as the second most pressing concern for retailers, with 87% of respondents expressing worry over this form of theft. Return frauds ranked third, with 56% of retailers citing it as a major issue impacting their businesses.

The study further revealed a 61% increase in theft-related assaults and violence since 2018, with a majority of retailers reporting a growing trend of violence within their stores. Michel Rochette, president of the RCC Quebec, emphasized the urgent need for legislative reforms to address the revolving door of criminal activities plaguing the retail industry.

In response to these challenges, retailers have been ramping up their investments in advanced security measures, including CCTV technology, secure showcases, and security personnel. These proactive steps are aimed at enhancing security and deterring organized crime activities within retail establishments.
