“Welland Leaders Outraged: Community Reels from Devastating Toddler Assault Case”

The City of Welland is in shock following a heartbreaking incident involving the assault of a young child during a home break-in.

Over the weekend, the Niagara Regional Police were called to a home near Crowland Avenue and York Street for a medical emergency. Upon arrival, officers discovered evidence of a forced entry and initiated a criminal investigation. The child was taken to a hospital outside the region for further medical attention and is currently in stable condition.

During the intrusion, the child, who is under five years old, was reportedly assaulted while the parents were unaware, according to authorities. After a witness provided surveillance footage of the area, the police identified a suspect.

A 25-year-old resident of Welland, Daniel Senecal, has been charged with several offenses, including aggravated sexual assault on a minor, assault, break and enter, and sexual interference.

Mayor Frank Campion denounced the attack, describing it as a “horrific act that is unimaginable.” He expressed sympathy and solidarity with the affected family, calling for stricter penalties for such crimes.

Police Chief Bill Fordy acknowledged the impact of the incident on the community and law enforcement personnel, urging the public to rely on credible information and respect the victim’s privacy.

Senecal is currently in custody as the investigation continues, with the police collaborating closely with the victim’s family and the Child Abuse Unit.
