The wildfire situation in British Columbia continues to impact major highways, with Highway 5 closed between Hope and Merritt due to ongoing flames. Another significant fire, the Turnbull Creek fire, is visible from Highway 3 in Manning Park and has spread uncontrollably, covering 7.5 square kilometers north of the highway.
According to the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS), the Turnbull Creek fire has seen considerable growth over the past two days, mainly moving northeast and westward. While it is currently about two kilometers away from Highway 3, there is no immediate threat to the highway as the fire has been spreading away from it.
With the Coquihalla Highway still closed due to a fire that has crossed over it and rapidly expanded, Highway 3 between Hope and Princeton serves as one of the main routes into the interior at present.
In related developments, the Mine Creek Fire near the Coquihalla summit has expanded to almost 20 square kilometers. Evacuation orders have been issued for Coquihalla Lake Lodge, Coquihalla Summit Snowmobile Club, and properties near Juliet Creek and Brookmere.
Fortunately, Highway 1 through the Fraser Canyon remains accessible, with a smaller fire near Sailor Bar being effectively managed at 111 hectares.
