Blue-collar workers in Montreal gathered for a crucial meeting on Saturday morning to decide on the possibility of a large-scale strike.
Members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) were urged to join the assembly at the Palais des congrès de Montréal, with discussions beginning at 9:30 a.m.
During the meeting, the union was expected to share updates on ongoing negotiations for a new collective agreement. They were also set to propose a strike mandate that could potentially lead to a widespread walkout, possibly lasting indefinitely.
CUPE Local 301, representing 6,600 employees of the City of Montreal, expressed hope that the threat of a strike would strengthen their position in negotiations with the city administration.
This decision comes amidst significant financial challenges faced by Montreal, prompting the city to consider cost-cutting measures.
