Montreal Ignites with Vibrant Ukrainian Spirit in 25th Anniversary Festival at Maisonneuve Park!

Montreal’s Ukrainian Festival celebrated its 25th anniversary in style at Maisonneuve Park, attracting a lively crowd with a vibrant showcase of music, dance, and traditional cuisine honoring Ukrainian heritage.

Described as the city’s second-largest cultural event, following the St. Patrick’s Day parade, the festival featured an array of activities. Attendees were treated to a captivating outdoor stage performance by renowned Ukrainian artists, a tempting array of authentic Ukrainian dishes, and a bustling marketplace brimming with handmade crafts and traditional attire.

One of the event’s highlights was a mesmerizing performance by Romax, the acclaimed folk-rock band from Kyiv, which left the audience in awe.

Gregory Bedik, the Montreal Ukrainian Festival spokesperson, highlighted the diverse offerings at the event, including 93 different kiosks showcasing various aspects of Ukrainian culture. He also recommended trying a traditional dish called banosh, a savory cornmeal blend with the unique cheese known as brinza-milken-green, emphasizing its delicious taste.

This year’s festival holds special significance as it coincides with the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, now approaching its third year. Organizers underscored that the event not only celebrates Ukrainian heritage but also serves as a testament to the resilience of Montreal’s Ukrainian community in the face of adversity abroad.

Bedik emphasized the importance of standing in solidarity with Ukraine, stating, “We’re still at war, defending our country and democracy in Europe and beyond. It’s crucial to showcase the world that the Ukrainian spirit endures.”

Furthermore, the festival aims to provide a warm and inclusive environment for newcomers, acknowledging Canada’s status as home to the world’s second-largest Ukrainian community, after Russia. Since the conflict’s onset, organizers estimate that over 40,000 Ukrainians have settled in Quebec, further highlighting the festival’s role in fostering unity and camaraderie.
