The shores of Lachine in Montreal came alive with excitement as dragon boat teams set sail for the 20th BDO Cedars CanSupport Dragon Boat Race. This annual event was not just about racing to the finish line but about raising funds for a noble cause. The goal was to collect $700,000 to support the Cedars Cancer Centre at the McGill University Health Centre, offering essential programs to assist cancer patients and their families during their difficult journey.
Jeff J. Shamie, the president & CEO of Cedars Cancer Foundation, highlighted the importance of these funds in providing various supportive services like art therapy, music therapy, meditation, and more to aid cancer patients in their treatment process.
Gwen Nacos, a cancer survivor and the driving force behind Cedars CanSupport, shared her inspiration for starting this initiative while undergoing her own battle with cancer. Partnering with Jeff Shamie, they transformed a simple dragon boat race into a remarkable fundraiser that has continued to thrive for two decades.
The event has grown significantly over the years, with this year’s race featuring 26 teams, each striving to raise $20,000. Despite the challenges, the participants have already raised a substantial amount towards their $700,000 goal, showcasing their dedication and determination to support those in need.
While the dragon boat race remains a central aspect of the event, it also serves as a poignant opportunity to honor and remember those who have lost their lives to cancer. Cancer survivor teams paid tribute to their loved ones by placing roses in the water, symbolizing their enduring love and remembrance.
