Montreal Parents Rally in Force Against Education Cuts, Demand Massive Reinvestment

Parents in Montreal rallied on Sunday to protest education budget cuts, expressing frustration and concern over the state of the school system.

Geneviève Simon Potvin, a mother of two high school students and a vocal advocate, highlighted the impact of the cuts, stating, “Parents see through the claims of reinvestment in schools. The system is in urgent need of proper funding.”

Simon Potvin is a member of Uni-es pour l’école, a grassroots movement formed in response to the government’s announcement of significant budget reductions totaling $570 million for schools in 2025-26.

Following public outcry, the government decided to allocate an additional $540 million to student services, contingent upon cost-saving measures being implemented.

Despite government assurances of substantial investment in education, parents continue to voice their concerns through various protests across the province.

The ongoing demonstrations aim to address not only recent budget cuts but also the long-standing impact of reduced funding on the education system.

Adam Pétrin, a father and college-level educator, emphasized the ongoing challenges faced by schools due to the cuts, particularly impacting support services like psychologists and guidance counselors.

Parents and educators demand a sustainable reinvestment in education, vowing to persist in their advocacy efforts until their voices are heard.
