The Maple Ridge community gathered on a poignant Sunday night for a candlelight vigil honoring a woman who went missing in June.
Authorities are yet to confirm the identity of a body discovered at the residence of Jessica Cunningham, a 43-year-old woman, in late August. Cunningham’s partner has been apprehended and charged with mistreatment of human remains.
Kristin Rasko, a close friend of Cunningham, took the initiative to coordinate the vigil to pay tribute to her friend and all victims of intimate partner violence.
Addressing the attendees, Rasko emphasized the importance of unity in combating such issues. “As a community, we must unite against these tragedies. Silence is not an option anymore… It’s destroying us. Therefore, as a community, we must stand united,” Rasko expressed to 1130 NewsRadio.
Rasko fondly remembered Cunningham for her ability to bring people together, stating that the vigil was a reflection of the lasting impact she had on others.
“Her spirit will endure through the way we support one another and the community we create in her honor with these candles,” Rasko shared.
While refraining from speculating on the circumstances surrounding Cunningham’s disappearance, Rasko urged Cunningham’s partner to share any information he may have for the sake of closure and truth.
Through the vigil, Rasko aims to empower victims of intimate partner violence to seek assistance and support, emphasizing Cunningham’s compassionate nature and undeserving fate.
