“Convicted Sex Offender Escapes Justice: Cuts Off Ankle Monitor and Vanishes Before Sentencing, York Police Report”

Authorities in York Region are actively seeking a man who evaded sentencing after being convicted of engaging in unlawful sexual activity with a minor. Chengyuan Chad Li, 27, from Markham, was found guilty of soliciting sexual services from a person under 18 and violating a court-ordered release condition last year.

During the trial, it was revealed that Li visited a location near Don Mills Road and Parkway Forest Drive in June 2023 and participated in inappropriate activities with a minor. Subsequently, as he awaited his sentencing, Li was fitted with a GPS ankle monitor to monitor his movements.

In a surprising turn of events, Li managed to remove his ankle monitor on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, just before his scheduled sentencing date. Despite his absence, Li was sentenced to five years in prison on August 14.

Efforts to locate Li have so far been unsuccessful, leading authorities to issue a warrant for his arrest. In a bid to enlist public support, investigators have released his photo and are urging anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward.

In addition to his initial charges, Li now faces further allegations of failing to adhere to his release terms and causing damage under $5000. York Regional Police have advised Li to seek legal counsel and surrender himself. They also caution that aiding his evasion could result in criminal repercussions.
