“Downtown Montreal Merchants Raise Urgent Alarm: Safety and Financial Security at Stake!”

Concerns Rise Over Safety and Economic Impact in Downtown Montreal

The Société de développement commercial (SDC), representing Quebec’s merchants, is expressing growing unease about safety issues in the heart of downtown Montreal.

Recent surveys have raised alarm bells, with findings showing that 74% of downtown workers have observed a decline in safety on public transit. Additionally, a study conducted by Léger at the end of 2024 revealed that 78% of residents feel a lack of security due to rising concerns related to drug addiction, homelessness, and mental health issues.

Glenn Castanheira, Executive Director of SDC downtown Montreal, emphasized the importance of addressing these security issues, stating that the sense of insecurity is incompatible with the city’s status as an economic, educational, and cultural hub. The SDC warns of potential financial repercussions, as downtown commercial properties have seen a 15% decrease in value, potentially resulting in significant losses given the city’s anticipated deficit.

Downtown Montreal plays a crucial role in generating city revenues, contributing around $1.6 billion annually, with properties like 1000 De la Gauchetière facing potential losses. Castanheira stressed the urgency of addressing these challenges to safeguard Montreal’s economic well-being and public finances, urging political candidates to take swift action and prioritize the security and vitality of the downtown core.
